AFTER THE STORM

If you were hit by one of the recent hail storms in Wylie or Dallas you are probably just now getting someone out to adjust your claim.

I’ll warn you now. You may be in for quite a surprise.

In recent years, a number of property insurers have snuck “cosmetic endorsements” into their policies. These endorsements state that there is no coverage for cosmetic damage. The hail must impact the functionality of the roof for it to be covered.

So what constitutes cosmetic damage versus functional damage?

Your guess is as good as mine. The carriers will argue that, as long as the roof isn’t leaking, you’re not covered.

Hail impacts almost always damage the life span of a roof. And what about 6 months or a year from now? Who is to say that an impact that appears “cosmetic” today will not corrode and affect the functionality tomorrow?

This is an area ripe for litigation. If you have a hail storm claim you would like to discuss, call me.
